Cecil Hondo’s Favorite Summer Cool Down Spots

Summer in the Hill Country can be brutal, but we’re fortunate to be situated right on top of one of Texas’s greatest natural wonders: the Edwards Aquifer. As well as providing fresh water for many communities in Central Texas, this underground waterway makes its way to the surface through a series of springs all across the region. This means cold, clear spring water – perfect for a summer dip – can be found all over. Here are three of our favorite swimming spots around Hondo.

Utopia Park Lake Dam

First on the list is Utopia Park Lake Dam. Just up the road in Utopia sits a small park on the Sabinal River with a dam, creating one of the best swimming holes in the region. The water is cold, clear, and deep, and the pool is wide and spacious, leaving plenty of room for swimming for several dozen visitors. The shore is just as inviting, with a large copse of live oak trees providing cool shade all day long. We like this spot for the amount of space it provides. There’s plenty of room for the family to spread out and explore, and the spring-fed Sabinal never disappoints on a hot summer day.

Garner State Park

Long a favorite of Central Texans, Garner State Park has been a prime swimming spot since 1941. Located between Concan and Leakey, Garner is situated on the Frio River, another cold spring-fed waterway that snakes its way through the Hill Country, and contains over 1,700 acres of preserved natural space along with 2.9 miles of the river. Garner is one of the most popular camping and recreational areas in the state and frequently fills up before noon, so make sure and head out early to get a prime spot!

Concan

Just south of Garner State Park is a true hidden gem of a Hill Country destination, Concan. There isn’t much to this tiny town, just a general store and several riverside cabins, but what it lacks in infrastructure, it makes up for in natural beauty and prime swimming spots. Just next to Highway 127 is one of the best, if not THE best, swimming pools in the state, the Concan Swimming Hole. Fed by the ice-cold Frio, this swimming hole has it all: clear, cold water, a deep bottom, rope swings, and a large boulder jutting out from the center of the pool, creating a perfect diving spot. The hole shrinks during dry spells, so make sure and check to see if it’s open before heading out for a swim.
