Heavy’s BBQ
First on the list is Heavy’s BBQ, located just off Highway 90, right in the middle of Hondo. This family-owned and operated restaurant serves up award-winning BBQ with a smile. Their selection of smoked meaty goodness will keep you coming back again and again. The menu includes the standards: brisket, sausage, ribs, turkey, chopped beef, and chicken, along with all the sides we love like cole slaw, beans, and potato salad. Along with the tried and true offerings, they put their own twist on their menu with specials like Frito Pie, the Heavy D (chunked brisket with sausage topped with beans and sauce, it’s as great as it sounds!) Loaded Mac and Cheese, and Loaded Baked Potatoes. Don’t miss the green beans or creamed corn either! The Peach Cobbler will easily satisfy your sweet tooth for dessert. They have daily lunch specials and Family Packs available as well, so if you need a quick midday bite or something for the whole family for dinner, make sure to show up early as they tend to sell out fast!
Rio’s Barbacoa
Although the next two on our list are chain spots, they still warrant a mention. This is Texas after all, and multiple locations means more BBQ for everyone. The first is Rio’s Barbacoa #14, also on Highway 90 just down the road from Heavy’s and right in the heart of Hondo. What this restaurant lacks in variety they make up for in quality. As the name suggests, their speciality is barbacoa, along with freshly-made tamales, menudo, chicharrones, and carnitas. And don’t skip on the fresh tortillas! If you like south-of-the-border style BBQ, this is a must-see. Grab some barbacoa, fresh tortillas, and a king size Big Red to-go, and you’ll want to come back tomorrow.
Bill Miller BBQ
The next name on our list is a Texas institution. Bill Miller BBQ has been serving up hot smoked meats and delicious sides all over Texas since they opened their first restaurant in San Antonio in 1950, and the Hondo location on Highway 90 is not to be missed. Opened by William T. and Ila Faye Miller with a $500 loan, what started as a family business has become a true Texas landmark. Along with the traditional favorites, Bill Miller also serves breakfast tacos, sandwiches, fried chicken, and even provides fully-catered holiday meals. Don’t miss out on the freshly-baked pies!
