Is there any vehicle more iconic than the Ford Mustang? A symbol of American ingenuity and freedom, the Ford Mustang has been a beloved fixture on the highways of America for over 50 years. At Cecil Atkission Ford in Hondo, we wanted to take a look back at the vehicle that set the bar for American muscle.

First introduced in 1964 at the World’s Fair, the 1965 Mustang was an instant hit. Ford dealers sold 22,000 Mustangs on the first day of its release, far exceeding expectations. This original model could get up to 271 horsepower when equipped with the legendary 289-cid V8. For the next eight years, the Mustang grew in size and power until the demand for muscle cars dipped in the late 60s/early 70s. Ford knew they had to evolve with the time to keep the Mustang relevant. With that in mind, they developed the Mustang II, a subcompact version of the Mustang with a smaller body and smaller engines. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive and sales skyrocketed again. The Mustang was back on top.

The US navigated multiple oil crises over the next two decades, and the styling and power of the Mustang shifted with the times. In 1979, the Mustang was built on Ford’s new Fox platform with multiple engines available. Ford began producing Mustangs with high horsepower over the years, climbing back to 210 by 1985. In 1987, Ford introduced the aero style, with flush headlights and a new interior. This version offered two versions: the Ford Mustang LX and the Ford Mustang GT. The LX was economy focused, while the GT came equipped with a V8 engine which topped out at 225 horsepower.

By the time the early 90’s rolled around, it was time for a return to form. Shoppers wanted a Mustang with a more classic look. Ford went back to the drawing board and introduced the new body style that many of us grew up with. This updated edition included retro features that called back to the original Mustang design. Ford would introduce new engine options to the platform over the years, including a V8 engine with 260 horsepower. In 2005, Ford would go even further into their retro styling with a squared-off shape that was widely loved by customers and critics. This new version was so popular that it caused a chain reaction of similar updates in rival models. The available 4.6-liter V8 had been tuned to deliver a whopping 300 horsepower.

The latest iteration of Mustang was revealed in 2013 and updated again in 2018 for a muscle car that combines classic styling with modern technology for a match made in heaven. The 2020 Ford Mustang GT is equipped with a 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 which delivers 460 horsepower, and that number skyrockets to 526 horsepower in the top-of-the-line Shelby GT350. Truly a modern classic, the Ford Mustang remains one of our most popular models.
