About Castroville
Founded in 1844 by Henri Castro, Castroville’s original inhabitants hailed from a region in eastern France known as Alsace. The town grew as a way station on the well-traveled San Antonio-El Paso Road as well as a key stop for delivering mail between San Antonio, El Paso, and beyond to San Diego. The town continued to grow with agriculture and livestock and today retains strong ties to the original settlers via architecture and language.
Castroville is one of the more unique towns to visit in Texas. The town’s Alsace heritage is on display throughout. A popular Historic Walking Tour features over 50 homes and commercial structures originally built in the mid to late 1800s. Among them is the Alsatian Steinbach House, which was built in the early 1600s in France and moved to Castroville in 1998. For outdoor fun, visit the Castroville Regional Park which includes the “Garden of Roots,” a flower garden geographically formed in the shape of Alsace, France.
